Professional development

Take your career in law further.

Some can be taken subjects as stand-alone courses, also known as ‘non-award study’. Non-award study gives legal practitioners and professionals the opportunity to refresh and update their knowledge or extend their understanding in law.

The legal landscape is forever changing, which means lawyers need to undertake study on a regular basis to keep up to date with changes and maintain their eligibility to practice in NSW.

Satisfying CPD requirements

Continuing professional development (CPD) or mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) is a requirement for all NSW lawyers. 10 hours of CPD or MCLE need to be completed each year between 1 April and 31 March.

Each subject within the LEC Diploma in Law exceeds the number of hours needed to satisfy this requirement, at the same time expanding your legal knowledge with a comprehensive and practical overview of an entire practice area.

Changing or adding to practice areas

If you have been practicing law for a while, there may be many reasons for changing or adding to your areas of practice. Subjects may be available that were not available when you last studied, your practice may be changing direction and you need to expand your knowledge, or you may have gained a new appreciation or interest in a certain area of the law.

Our subjects are also relevant to accountants, conveyancers, teachers, and those in local government and the finance industry.

Australian Legal Qualifications

At any time, there are a number of students in the course who are overseas qualified lawyers who are seeking to practice law in Australia.

Note: This course does not confer any visa entitlement for international students.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

CPD requirements can be satisfied by completing a course within the Diploma in Law program. You may choose to do the assessment and the final examination, but this is not a requirement of non-award study.

Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE)

One Diploma in Law subject would easily meet the 10-hours-per-year MCLE requirement, whether you choose to attend evening or weekend classes.
